BEFORE WE GET STARTED… A BRIEF INTRODUCTION
The Lathe is different than the other Shopsmith operations -- and for some woodworkers, the most difficult to master. However, don't be discouraged, because it's also often described as the most creative and most rewarding. This makes turning well worth the effort you put into it!
There are 2 types of Lathe Turning -- SPINDLE TURNING (for example, porch or stair railings) -- and FACEPLATE TURNING (for example, bowls, goblets, etc.).
Let's get started by explaining the procedures for setting-up your lathe up for each of the 2 types of turning… then move on to a discussion of the 2 turning techniques.
STEP 1: IDENTIFY THE LATHE COMPONENTS YOU WILL NEED
Every Shopsmith Machine model comes equipped with a collection of components and accessories for each tool operation. But before you Get Started, we'll need to be sure you have the appropriate components for each machine you own. You might remember in our earlier topic, Getting to know your Machine, we helped you identify your Machine Model.
Select your Machine Model Below to find a list of all the components you will be needing for lathe turning.
Once you have done that, gather the parts together that you will need for Lathe Turning.
STEP 2: ASSEMBLING THE LATHE TURNING COMPONENTS YOU'LL BE NEEDING
STEP 3: GET THE INSTRUCTION YOU WILL NEED TO GET STARTED
Now that you've learned all about your Shopsmith Lathe, you're ready to move on to the next Woodworking Operation -- using the Shopsmith Over-Table Router.
